A category, not a marketing word

Can your building take a lift?

A home lift is built around a small passenger rating. The planning benchmark for a residential lift is about 250 kg, or roughly four people. A six or eight person machine sold to you as a home lift is a different product altogether, with a different shaft and a different price, and we price that passenger machine separately. This page is about the house.

Most home lifts go into houses that are already finished, and the deciding factor is rarely the budget. It is how much headroom sits above the shaft route, and how deep a pit the ground floor can take.

Three routes, depending on how much of the house is already built

Still building

Easiest and cheapest. We mark the shaft on your drawings before the slab is cast.

Already built

A stairwell void or a spare corner takes a self-supporting metal shaft with minimal civil work.

No space inside

An external structure is erected against the outside wall and lands at every floor.

Drive types

The three technologies

Most houses suit one of three drive types. The survey picks the one that fits the pit, the headroom and the wall you actually have, because we will not choose a technology from a photograph. Where two of them work, we price both and let you decide on the total.

Hydraulic

A direct or split piston. Best where travel is low and headroom is tight. A 350 mm pit or a pitless arrangement is possible on many finished houses. Oil is part of the machine.

Pitless traction

A traction drive arranged so the house does not need a conventional pit. Quieter and cheaper to run than hydraulic, and it wants a little more headroom in return.

Wall mounted hydraulic

The hydraulic package mounts to a load-bearing wall, so the civil footprint stays smaller than a full shaft pour. Offered only where the wall and the loads allow it.

Does it need three-phase power?

Not on the standard configuration. Single phase 220 V is the published supply. The survey confirms it for your house.
