Dumbwaiters

The small lift that saves the stairs

A service lift for food, crockery, linen, files and stock. It carries goods, never people, which is what keeps it small, quiet and comparatively cheap to install.

What it is for

Restaurants, hotels, hospitals and homes with a basement kitchen

If your kitchen and your dining room are on different floors, somebody is carrying trays up a staircase several hundred times a week. A dumbwaiter removes that trip. The same machine moves linen in a hotel, files in an office, samples in a laboratory and stock in a shop.

Because it carries goods and not people, the shaft is smaller, the safety requirement is different and the price sits far below a passenger machine. It is the cheapest lift we sell.

How it is built

Four things worth knowing before you ask for a price

It never carries people

A dumbwaiter is rated for goods only. Anyone who offers to size one so a child could ride in it is selling you something that will not pass inspection.

The shaft can be built or bought

Into a masonry shaft where one exists, or into a self-supporting steel frame we fabricate, in the same way as our structure lifts.

Table height or floor level

Table-height openings suit a kitchen pass. Floor-level openings suit trolleys. Decide this before the civil work, because it changes the opening.

Stainless throughout

Food service means a cabin and hatch you can actually clean. Stainless steel car, stainless hatch doors, coved corners.

What we need from you

Five answers and we can quote

  • What is being carried, and roughly what it weighs.
  • How many floors, and the height between them.
  • Whether an opening or shaft already exists, and its size.
  • Table height or floor level at each landing.
  • Whether the building is finished or still under construction.

Price

Why there is no from-price on this page

A dumbwaiter is sized around what it carries, and the range between a 50 kg kitchen hatch and a 250 kg stockroom lift is wide enough that a published from-price would tell you nothing useful about your job.

Send the five answers above and you get an itemised quotation, on the same terms as every other machine we sell: the licence and the finish inside the number, the completion date in the contract, and interest from us if your site was ready and we run late.

What the opening has to be

Two standard sizes cover most of what we install, both rated 50 kg to 250 kg. A is the car width and B the car depth; C and D are the lift well; H is the clear car height and E the clear entrance. These are planning figures. The survey confirms them against your building before anything is ordered.

A dumbwaiter carries goods and never people, which is what keeps the well this small. Anything outside these two sizes is made to order and quoted against your opening.

Ask about this lift

Tell us the building. We will tell you the number.

A dumbwaiter is quoted against the load and the opening height rather than a standard table. Tell us what it carries, between which two floors, and at what counter height you want the hatch.

  • A free site survey. The drawings are yours whether or not you order.
  • An itemised quotation, with the licence and the designer cabin already inside it.
  • A written completion date, and interest paid by us if we miss it.
